With warmer weather approaching and summer travel plans taking shape, fuel costs are top of mind. In Northeast Ohio, AAA reports an average gas price of $2.98 per gallon as of the end of April 2025. While it’s tempting to drive across town for the lowest price, this approach may cost more than it saves… Choosing a gas station along your daily route or close to home can reduce expenses from fuel consumption, vehicle wear, and time on the road. For example, driving 10 miles round-trip to save $0.10 per gallon on a 15-gallon tank saves just $1.50. However, if your vehicle averages 25 miles per gallon, you’ll burn 0.4 gallons, about $1.20 at $3 per gallon, nearly offsetting the savings. Add in maintenance costs and the value of your time, and the financial benefit diminishes further. Local gas prices typically vary by less than $0.20 per gallon, making extra trips for cheaper fuel rarely worthwhile unless filling a large tank. By prioritizing convenience, you save money and simplify your routine. This summer, weigh the true cost of chasing small savings at the pump and consider refueling closer to home.
